Trimming vs. Pruning
Trimming addresses the immediate and visible: overgrown branches encroaching on structures, limbs blocking views or clearances, and general shape maintenance — the kind of routine tree and shrub care that keeps your property looking its best. It's reactive work that keeps things tidy and safe.
Pruning is about the tree's long-term health and structure. It removes dead, diseased, or structurally compromised wood; improves light and air penetration; corrects defects while they're still manageable; and invests in decades of future tree health. What We Will Not Do: Topping
Tree topping — cutting the main trunk or major scaffold branches back to stubs — is one of the most harmful practices in the tree industry. It creates large wounds trees struggle to compartmentalize, triggers dense, weak regrowth that's far more hazardous than the original canopy, and significantly shortens tree lifespan. It also destroys the tree's natural form permanently and makes future maintenance more costly and difficult.
We do not top trees under any circumstances. If another company has quoted you a topping job, we'd encourage a second opinion. There is almost always a better solution.
Types of Pruning We Perform
- Dead wood removal — removing dead branches that pose a hazard and invite decay into the tree
