Tree Removal Cost Guide: Rochester NY (2026)

January 28, 2026 · Spartan Tree & Landscape

Tree removal pricing varies widely, and for good reason — every tree is different. Here's a practical breakdown of what drives cost in the Rochester area and what you should expect to pay.

Average Cost by Tree Size

For most residential tree removals in Rochester and surrounding towns, here are typical price ranges:

Small trees (under 25 feet): $300–$600. These include ornamental trees, small fruit trees, and young shade trees. Usually straightforward jobs that take a few hours.

Medium trees (25–50 feet): $600–$1,200. Most common residential removals — mature ornamentals, mid-size maples, and birches. May require aerial equipment.

Large trees (50–80 feet): $1,200–$2,000. Large oaks, maples, and pines. These typically require crane work or technical rigging, especially near structures.

Very large or hazardous trees (80+ feet): $2,000–$3,500+. Old-growth trees, trees on structures, trees tangled in power lines. These are specialized jobs requiring extensive equipment and planning.

What Affects the Price

Proximity to structures: A tree in the middle of an open yard costs less than one 6 feet from your garage. The closer the tree is to your house, fence, garage, or power lines, the more careful (and time-consuming) the removal needs to be.

Access: Can we get equipment to the tree? If the tree is in a tight backyard with no gate access, everything has to be carried out by hand. That adds labor time and cost.

Condition: Dead trees are unpredictable. Storm-damaged trees may be partially hanging. These hazardous conditions require extra safety precautions and can increase the price.

Stump grinding: Most quotes include removal of the tree only. Stump grinding is typically an additional $150–$500 depending on stump size. We offer bundled pricing when you combine both.

How to Get an Honest Estimate

Get at least two or three estimates. A reputable company will come to your property, look at the tree, and give you a written quote — not a price over the phone. Be wary of anyone who quotes without seeing the tree or asks for full payment upfront.

At Spartan Tree, every estimate is free, on-site, and includes full cleanup. What we quote is what you pay. Call or request a quote online.
